Sunscreen usage tips

for face and body

Sunscreen is your best friend when it comes to protecting your skin. See which one is best for you and check out our usage tips

On sunny days it is essential to protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun such as skin burns, premature aging and even the danger of developing some type of skin cancer.

Using a good sunscreen on your face and body can prevent most of this damage, as these products are able to absorb or reflect solar radiation.

All people, regardless of skin type, should use sunscreen to avoid future problems.

Understand the protective factors

Products with higher factors work as blockers, but above SPF 30 (which protects the skin from up to 97% of UVB rays) the increase in protection is very small.

Sunscreens are products capable of absorbing or reflecting the sun's rays. The sun protection factor (SPF) indicates the amount of time you can remain protected from the sun's rays.

So, for example, if skin without any protection starts to burn within ten minutes of exposure to the sun, with an SPF of 10, it will take 100 minutes (10 times longer).

Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30

If you have very fair skin, skin problems, or are hypersensitive to sunlight, use so-called sun blockers, with an SPF above 50, which block ultraviolet radiation.

However, be aware that sunscreen may not completely prevent the passage of UV rays and infrared rays, which also cause burns.

And even black-skinned people should protect themselves, as the melanin in this skin type corresponds to an SPF of 4, which does not prevent burns or the risk of cancer.

Even for those who are not going to spend the summer at the beach, the recommendations are the same.

If you are going to spend a vacation, especially in high regions, don't be careless - every 300 meters of altitude, approximately, increases by 4% the intensity of the redness produced on the skin by ultraviolet light.

To live in peace with the sun's rays

• Use sunscreen daily on the most exposed areas, especially on the face, neck, ears, hands and arms - even if you are not at the beach;

• The ideal is to apply sunscreen between 30 minutes and one hour before sun exposure;

• Choose sunscreens that protect against both type "A" and "B" ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB);

• On the face, always use a product with a high SPF (above 50), and don't forget the lipsticks with sunscreen for the lips;

• Never forget to use sunscreen or sunscreen even under umbrellas or tents. It is proven that cotton or canvas tents absorb about 50% of UV radiation and nylon tents only 5%. Remember that sand and other surfaces also reflect solar radiation;

• Likewise, in cloudy weather (mormaço), it is important to apply sunscreen;

• Reapply the product every two hours and after each shower (regardless of whether the package says the product is waterproof);

• Avoid using perfumes together with filters, as this combination can cause burns or blemishes on the skin.
